Pilatus (German Pilatus; French Pilatus) is a mountain range in the Swiss Alps, on the border of the cantons of Obwalden, Nidwalden and Lucerne, and its main peak (2128.5 m, also called Tomlishorn, German Tomlishorn). According to legend, the name of the mountain comes from the name of Pontius Pilate, because his grave was supposedly located on the slope of the mountain. For a long time this mountain was considered impregnable and even forbidden - the locals were sure that spirits and gnomes lived there. According to one of the legends, the spirit of the “fifth procurator of Judea, the rider Pontius Pilate”, by whose order Jesus was executed, took refuge in one of the local lakes. In 1387, the horror of this ghost, which was believed to be the cause of bad weather here, led the authorities of Lucerne to forbid any climbing of the mountain.
