Visit Visit our website Shot by an American railroad fan (mostly) in Europe, this lengthy reel shows wonderful views of European tram and trolley lines as well as the famed Wuppertaler Schwebebahn railway (:44-6:40). At (7:15), U.S. Army liveried steam locomotives are seen, including one marked #606. This is one of the United States Army Transportation Corps S160 Class of 2-8-0 Consolidation steam locomotives, designed for heavy freight work in Europe during World War II. The location is not known for this footage, but it doesn't appear to be Europe -- probably more likely Ft. Eustis, Virginia where it operated on the Fort Eustis Military Railway in the late 1950's. This Lima 8784 locomotive is now re-lettered to Norfolk and Western #606 and part of the Crewe Railroad Museum. At (11:30), shots of an electrified mountain railway, possibly in Switzerland (an out-of-focus station name in German is visible at 13:30). At (14:45), U.S. Army jeep and tram is shown in front of what is believed to be the Frankfurt, Germany train station. The trams shown in this footage seem to include Frankfurt M series articulated trams, as well as Frankfurt L and Frankfurt K series 4-wheel trams. At (19:21), a tram with destination sign for the Hohemark subway station in Oberusel, is shown. At (22:48), Swiss electric locomotive #589 type Ae 6/6. At (24:31) the entrance to the tunnel through the Schollenen Gorge, known as the Gotthard Eisenbahn-Tunnel, is shown. A switch engine hauls a train at (24:48). At (25:51) an incline or funicular railroad is shown, possibly the Pilatus Railway. Swiss Federal Railways train enters station at (27:56). At (28:28), footage shot in Germany or Switzerland of tram lines, at (30:56) a sign is visible for Grossfeldstrasse, possibly in Kriens, Switzerland. The tram at 32:16 appears to be a Swiss Standard tram. The Wuppertaler Schwebebahn (“Wuppertal Suspension Railway“) is located in Wuppertal, Germany. Its original name was Einschienige Hängebahn System Eugen Langen (“Eugen Langen Monorail Overhead Conveyor System“). It is the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world and is a unique system in Germany. It was designed by Eugen Langen; the first track opened in 1901. The Schwebebahn is still in use as a normal means of local public transport, moving 25 million passengers annually. New rail cars were ordered in 2015, called Generation 15, and the first new car went into service in December 2016.
