Perhaps most often referred to by its first line, “Смело, друзья не теряйте“, the Hymn of the People's Will has uncertain origins. It probably arose circa 1861. The music was apparently written by a student of Kazan university; the name of the song suggests a connection or association with the organization Народная Воля (meaning “the People's Will“) whose goals were to end the Russian autocracy , convene a governing assembly, and implement universal sufferage. Whatever the case may be, by the time of the October Revolution in 1917 the song had become quite popular. It remained popular with volunteer regiments during the Spanish Civil War, though it later fell into disuse. --- Translation to English: Bravely, friends! Do not lose Your courage in an uneven battle; You save Mother Homeland, Your honor, and freedom. If you must die In prisons and damp mines, -- Your work will always resound In generations of the living. Let yourselves be planted in prisons, Let us be tried by fire, Let them send us to the mines, Let us pass through all punishments! If you must die In prisons and damp mines, -- Your work will always resound In generations of the living. The moment of renewal will come -- The people will sing you a hymn; They will remember us by our kind words; They will visit us at our graves. Well, let yourselves have to die In prisons and damp mines, -- Our work will always resound In generations of the living. --- I release this translation, video, etc. into the public domain. The song itself and the original text are already in the public domain.
