The footage uses animations to show the atomic structure of crude oil and the basics of the distillation process. This includes a demonstration of the separation of three elements into their respective categories after they have all been mixed together. It then continues with an animation of how the distillation process functions in a modern refinery. There is also footage of modern refineries. 0:08 Glowing Shell Logo with title “Shell Presents”, 0:22 Title “Crude Oil Distillation”, 0:37 Credits with producers, 0:48 Crude Oil bubbling, 0:58 Animation of the chemical composition of petroleum, 1:30 demonstration of how many atoms would be in a drop of water if we enlarged them to be visible to the human eye, 2:06 animation continues with demonstration of how hydrogen and carbon atoms can be combined with each other to create molecules, 3:26 water being heated in a kettle and begins to boil, 3:58 list of boiling points of different hydrocarbons in crude oil, 4:09 Boiling points and chemical compositions of different types of oils shown, 4:38 scientist mixes a clear and a dark liquid, mixes them with crystals and begins boiling them, 5:16 Clear liquid begins to boil first, evaporates and is turned back into liquid, 5:52 Dark liquid boils away in the flask and begins to condense after all clear liquid is gone, 6:15 Solidified crystals shown as the only remaining thing at the bottom of the flask, 6:20 all three elements shown next to each other, 6:50 Deck of cards shown, then shuffled up, then sorted by numbers and types to represent boiling points of different hydrocarbons, 7:27 animation of petroleum distillation and how it functions, 8:16 different chambers condense different hydrocarbons, 8:24 Modern refinery shown, 8:54 animation to demonstrate the function of a fractionating tower, 10:10 lightest fraction of hydrocarbons are drawn off, 10:36 return to playing card analogy to demonstrate how different fractions of hydrocarbons are sorted out, 11:45 Animation begins showing how each of the different fractions will be refined for a different purpose, such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel, lubricating oil, and asphalt, 12:12 different shots of a complex modern refinery with male employees working there, 12:44 Shell Logo with Title “The End” We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
