For some time I have been using the Boolean and the Voxels together in Houdini. With this workflow you can make quick hardsurfaces, so in my case I have made a gun as example. With the boolean it is easy to make shapes and with the voxels you can make the highpoly for baking. I can really recommend you trying out this workflow and combine this with polyreduce and auto uv. This idea has also been used in other software, like 3Ds max booleans and then use Zbrush to make Highpoly.
