A group of grimy-faced coalmen arrive on a lorry and jump off the back as it stops. The crowd looks on as they have competitors' names hung on their backs and chests, such as 'Open Cast', 'Nutty Slack' and 'Ovoids'. The competitors take sacks of coal on their backs and walk off across the field in a coal carrying race. C/U of pint glasses being filled with water. One man has to pick up some of the coal he has dropped along the way. Men stop to drink from the glasses. Several shots of men walking around the course.
