The Dutch Rhythm Steel & Show Band is a Dutch steel band with musicians of Surinamese origin. The band is founded in Zaandam in 1969 by Adolf Tevreden and Bernito Riley. At the time of its foundation, Suriname was still part of the Dutch kingdom. They play oil drums that have been converted into a percussion instrument, which gives the band a characteristic sound. In the early days they performed under the name Silvertone Steel Band, but in Germany also as Trinidad Oil Company. In early 1977 they had a modest hit with ’January, February, March’, (Calender Song) which made it to ’Alarmschijf’ (Dutch for ’pick of the week’)and gave the band national fame. In the years that followed, the band is still active and performs at parties. The composition of the band changes regularly, but the relatives of founders Tevreden and Riley remain active.
