Rwanda Pirouette ‘They were coming from everywhere, even to your door. They were coming in big groups… wearing leaves, war paint, whistling, and they were many. They were hunting….’ A Tutsi woman recalled the terrible days almost thirty years ago. In 1994, Rwanda saw the genocide of the Tutsi tribe. In 100 days, their old enemies, the Hutu, slaughtered nearly a million people. They massacred even their relatives and did not spare infants. On the 4th of July 1994, the Rwandan Patriotic Front units entered the capital Kigali. This is considered the day the genocide ended, and its anniversary is celebrated as Liberation Day. Thirty years later, there is no tribal division, and the country is considered one of the most peaceful in Africa. The symbol of the new life is the ballet school, the only one in the country.
