As tiny chicks, kingfishers feathers are protected by a waxy cuticle. Then shortly before these birds fledge these pins drops off to reveal the brilliant blue feathers underneath. Pin feathers Kingfishers keep their pins longer than many other birds because these cuticles help keep the chick feathers from becoming clogged by th
