(18 Jun 1982) STORY Israeli troops have now surrounded the Lebanese capital of Beirut. Lebanon, already torn apart by internal warfare, has been decimated, after almost two weeks of fighting. The invasion followed an assassination attempt on the Israeli ambassador in London. But for months the Israelis have been threatening to remove the Palestinian Liberation Organisation from Southern Lebanon once and for all. The push to Beirut, however, was unexpected. Thousands of people have already died and hundreds of thousands are now homeless.
