The Nazi capitulation was signed a week after Hitler committed suicide. German General Alfred Jodl signed the German surrender documents just before 3 a.m. on May the 7th at Allied headquarters in Reims and it was witnessed by US Lieutenant General Walter Bedell Smith, a French and a Soviet general . The next day- May 8, 1945 - an armistice was signed in Berlin But World War II raged on in the Pacific until Japan's surrender on August 15.
