Seaplanes are awesome! There is just something special about them from their graceful take offs and landings to just the way they look. I like to watch floatplanes in action every chance I get. Fortunately for me I spent some time recently in Anchorage which is home to the largest and most active seaplane base in the world with nearly 200 flights per day! Well, it’s technically two lakes, Lake Hood and Lake Spenard. Both are essentially the same lake now after the state of Alaska dredged a water runway and taxiway connecting them. This lake also has a spectacular mountain range in the background adding to the beauty of the planes themselves and the lake. If you find yourself in Anchorage I’d highly recommend coming to this seaplane base and checking them out. Although all around the lake has unique perspectives of the seaplanes taking off and landing, in my opinion the best vantage point is near the windsock by the airport cell phone lot.
