After a spirited opening with Dvořák’s tempestuous Scherzo Capriccioso, Sir Simon and the COE welcome Kožená for two irresistible song cycles: five of Bartók’s treasured Hungarian Folk Songs, inspired by tunes he collected traveling around his homeland; and Mahler’s sublimely lyrical Rückert-Lieder, a work that marked a turning point in his compositional style.
