Stargazers were stunned when tuning into the livestream of Japan’s Subaru telescope, as they watched a mysterious and beautiful spiral appear, grow and then disappear over the skies of Hawaii. The observatory, which is perched on top of Mauna Kei, Hawaii’s tallest mountain, captured the spectacular time lapse on its live camera outside the main telescope on the morning of January 18. The bright and colorful nature of the spiral wowed onlookers and researchers. The spiral was formed in the wake of the second stage of a SpaceX launch vehicle, which was launching a GPS satellite for the US military.
