German History Archive ▶ In the Balkan campaign during World War II, the German Wehrmacht attacked the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the Kingdom of Greece on April 6, 1941, occupying both countries within a few weeks after the Italian ally's attack on Greece had previously ended in disaster. The Wehrmacht invasion was supported by Italian, Bulgarian and Hungarian troops. Yugoslav forces surrendered on April 17, and Greece on April 23. However, fighting on the island of Crete, where British troops had landed, dragged on until June 1, 1941. Bulgarian Tsar Boris granted the Wehrmacht a right of passage to Greece in November 1940.
