Two-photon imaging of a brain slice from a transgenic mouse expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) in microglial cells. A point source of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is applied locally through a pipette to simulate tissue damage which results in ATP release. Microglial processes migrate in the direction of the ATP gradient to its source within minutes. This data indicate that microglia, as the brain’s defense cells, are capable of responding rapidly to tissue
