Russia and China are allegedly preparing a case against the US. How far will they go with that?  It all starts with the “Collin Powell's Testtube“.  Stay tuned as we debrief this.  The United States is often considered a champion of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Yet, the US has been involved in several controversial military interventions that have resulted in devastating consequences for the people of the countries involved. From the Vietnam War to the Iraq War, the US has been accused of committing war crimes and violating international law. Despite these allegations, the US has largely escaped accountability for its actions, while other countries, such as Russia, have been held accountable for their actions. This article will explore why the US must be held accountable for its war crimes, the UN-Western bias, and how the US has managed to get away with it. The Case of Colin Powell One of the most controversial figures in US military history is Colin Powell, a former US Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Powell played a key role in the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, which was based on the false premise that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. Powell famously presented a case to the United Nations Security Council in February 2003, which he claimed provided evidence that Iraq was concealing weapons of mass destruction. This speech was instrumental in convincing the UN Security Council to authorize the use of force against Iraq. However, it later emerged that the evidence presented by Powell was flawed and that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction. Powell has since admitted that his presentation to the UN was a “blot“ on his record and that he regrets it. But Powell's role in the Iraq War goes beyond his flawed presentation to the UN. As the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell played a key role in planning the invasion of Iraq and in advocating for the use of force. Powell's actions have been widely criticized as a violation of international law and a war crime. In 2021, the Guardian published an article stating that Powell should be tried for war crimes, calling his presentation to the UN a “colossal lie“ that helped to justify an illegal war. The article argues that Powell's actions led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and destabilized the entire region.  Similarly, an article in the Times of India argues that Powell was a war criminal and the “most dangerous weapon of mass distraction.“ The article claims that Powell's presentation to the UN was a deliberate attempt to mislead the world and justify a war that was based on false pretenses. The article also argues that Powell's actions were a violation of international law and that he should be held accountable for his crimes. The UN-Western Bias Despite the evidence against Powell and the US, the country has largely escaped accountability for its actions. This has led many to question the role of the United Nations and the Western bias within the international community. The UN has been accused of being biased in favor of Western powers and of ignoring the crimes committed by these powers. For example, the article in Statecraft argues that the war crimes committed by Western powers in Iraq were never properly investigated, while Russia has been unfairly targeted by the UN for its actions in Ukraine. The article claims that the UN has been biased against Russia and has ignored the crimes committed by the US and other Western powers. The article argues that this bias undermines the credibility of the UN and the international legal system.
