Facing the toughest test of his young pro career, Marine veteran and 2012 U.S. Olympian Jamel Herring put his undefeated record on the line against rugged veteran Denis Shafikov, who fell short of winning a 135-pound title in his previous bout. Right from go, though, Shafikov, who was at a major height disadvantage against the rangy Herring, controlled the tempo and tone of the fight. He really shook things up in the closing seconds of the 2nd round, scoring a knockdown with a thunderous right hook. Herring survived the knockdown, but the tone of the fight didn't change moving forward, as Shafikov smelled the opportunity and kept the pressure on the rest of the way. The fight was nearly stopped in the 9th round, as a series of shots up top from Shafikov had the bleeding Herring wobbled and struggling to get his legs back.
