THE YOUNG VIOLINIST Francis Liu introduced the Midtown Concerts audience to an 18th century composer few had previously heard of: Ivan Khandoshkin (1747 – 1804). A violinist in the court of Catherine the Great, Khandoshkin is believed to have developed his craft under the tutelage of the Italian violinists who dominated the court orchestra. This performance, live streamed from the Church of the Transfiguration in Manhattan on January 14, 2021, represents a rare opportunity to hear his Three Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 3, a haunting set influenced by Russian song, Italian virtuosity, and a cosmopolitan gallant style. Music begins at 02:55. The three selections on the program are Violin Sonata in G Minor, Op. 3 No. 1 Marcia: Maestoso - Allegro assai - Andante con variazioni Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 3 No. 2 Andante - Tempo di minuetto - Rondo Allegro Violin Sonata in D Major, Op. 3 No. 3 Andante maestoso - Minuetto grazioso - Allegro vivace
