The winner of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition returns to the Verbier Festival to take us on an international tour in a program of works inspired by foreign melodies: Bach’s bright and stately French Suite No. 5; Liszt’s interpretation of Italian gondola music and tarantella in Venezia e Napoli, a supplement to the Années de pèlerinage; Ravel’s heartbreaking ode to a Spanish princess, the poignant Pavane pour une infante défunte; and, finally, the 8 Concert Etudes by Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin, irresistible blends of classical with American jazz, ragtime, and blues.
