This is intended as a better than camera audio reference for the OLD Martin D-1 guitars (1993-2005) that were sold as Martin's first try at entry-level priced “good“ guitars ($919 new with case), so it's not fancy but delivers a bit-o classic Martin sound/playability. The older D-1's have a solid Mahogany neck (video says cedar... I was wrong) instead of the stratabond like new D-1's as well as a SOLID MAHOGANY BACK with 3-ply mahogany laminate sides instead of sapele laminate back/sides like on newer ones. Also the older ones have Rosewood fingerboards vs. Morado. They really are better sounding than the newer ones (which sound ok actually), so if you are in the market for a nice “budget“ Martin that does have the distinct Martin tone better than the new D-1's can offer, it's a good option if you are lucky enough to find an older one used... just check it doesn't have the stratabond neck (it's easy to tell since it's striped). I bought mine new & just had a refret done, & it's starting to open up nicely & if you push/drive it it gives that D-18 tone pretty well. I'm only using cheap mics (AT2020) & (AKG 2300S) mics into a Zoom H4n so it really does sound better than the video but that's the best I can do for now. fyi, the same “older“ D-1R's (released same period as older D-1's) are as you would expect same Sitka top, but with laminate rosewood back/sides vs. just hog lam sides with solid hog back on the D-1. The D-1R's do have solid Spanish cedar or hog neck as well so no stratabond. Soooo ie: if ya want a poor mans D-18(sitka/hogany), a good used D-1 will do, but not too sure about a poor-mans D-28(sitka/rosewood) in the D-1R but I have not played one of the older D-1R's... seems laminate backs are not desirable by most, but in this price range & given how good mine feels/plays/sounds it's prob a good option. But if it's a D-1R or D-1 made after 05 then keep looking I say.
