– The allure of a round engine is an oft-expressed notion by many a pilot and aircraft aficionado. The heyday of the radial engine is firmly in the past, yet the mystique has never waned. Verner Motor has developed a modern incarnation of these classics that delivers the advantages of the radial configuration. For those who seek a true radial engine for a light aircraft, a Verner engine offers a compelling value. ScaleBirds have always been developed with the idea of round engines in mind. With the Scarlett 7 and 5 series engines, we have found an ideal round engine solution for our proposed lite and sport fighter lines. In order to make these engines more accessible in the future, we have agreed to act as dealers in the USA for Verner Motor. While this should lead to ScaleBirds that can come complete with comprehensive firewall forward installation packages with these unique engines from the Czech Republic, it also means that anyone who wishes to use a Verner on their own project may find ScaleBirds a good source of information, products, and support. The Verner Scarlett 3VW is a direct answer to the problem of a light, powerful 4-stroke for real ultralight aircraft. As a direct-drive radial using VW cylinders, this engine comes in at almost the same weight as the most powerful 1/2 VW conversions, yet generates torque closer to a full VW. No longer do you have to carry the extra case weight and deal with the design limitations of a chopped motor: the Scarlett is designed from the ground up to be small and powerful, while still delivering all the satisfaction and sound of the real radial it is. The Scarlett VW uses a Walbro diaphragm type carburetor, distributing to all 3 cylinders and will take both auto & aviation fuels. The electric starter is optional, and easily installed or removed. As with all Scarlett engines, the oil is a dry-sump system with return from the lower cylinders and the bottom of the case, and ignition is controlled by computer and fired by individual ignition coils. The Verner Scarlett 5Si is a modern radial that brings real power in a minimal package at a great price. With specs and performance that put it right next to other 80HP engines, the Scarlett 5Si is still lighter than the other direct drive options and without the cost and complexity of the higher revving redrive engines of similar output. Verner makes this engine using the same cylinders and heads and systems as their already successful 7 cylinder engines, but reducing the weight and cost while keeping the power in a useful range. This motor would be a great fit for many aircraft that are out there today, and for those yet to come. The Scarlett 5Si uses a throttle-body fuel injector with 2 main ports and 1 backup, distributing fual-air to all 5 cylinders. The engine will happily take both auto & aviation fuels. The electric starter is mounted direct to the back of the case. As with all Scarlett engines, the oil is a dry-sump system with return from the lower cylinders and the bottom of the case, and ignition is controlled by computer and fired by individual ignition coils. The Verner Scarlett 7Si delivers the most power in the Scarlett series, yet retains the compact size of its siblings. With over 130 HP at your disposal, the 7Si starts to really mean business. Whether a Great War replica fighter, a classic 2-seat biplane, or perhaps one of our own ScaleBirds someday, the 7 cylinders and direct drive are a great combination that deliver the right look, the right sound, and all the performance.
