In the fifth installment of this series, learn how to measure PLL phase noise using Mixed-Signal Blockset™ in Simulink®. In this demonstration, Kerry adds phase noise to the VCO subsystem and measures the resulting phase noise at the PLL output. He achieves this by leveraging a Phase Noise Measurement block that is part of Mixed-Signal Blockset. This block uses a hybrid approach to measuring phase noise. The measurement technique is based on analyzing the spectrum of the variation in zero-crossing times. This installment in the Modeling PLLs Using Mixed-Signal Blockset series only shows the mechanics of setting up the model for a phase noise measurement. In future videos in the series, Kerry will dive under the hood of these blocks to better understand how they work.
