Continuous-time 1-D dynamics of the form dx/dt=f(x) can be visualized in a number of ways. You can plot x versus t for various initial conditions, and that's nice. But even better is to plot dx/dt against x, where you can see the linearized dynamics and stability criterion manifested. Eventually, working with a vector field on the line is all you need...
