That actually sounds way more dramatic than it is, in reality, the two sides cannot agree on two simple things. Funding for the state and local governments, and overall budget for the stimulus package. While both the house of representatives and the senate agree on the $1200 stimulus checks, they have not both approved of any bills that give us our second stimulus. So what’s the latest status on the stimulus check and are we still getting it? Democrats proposed the Heroes Act which was passed only by the House of Representatives on May 12. That one included $3 trillion dollars worth of stimulus money. It also included a budget for $413 billion dollars as a direct payment to the American people for the $1,200 stimulus checks for anyone making less than $75,000. That budget was much more money than the original CARES Act which cost only $293 billion for the stimulus checks. The reason for that is because people received $500 for their dependents from the CARES act , whereas the HEROES Act, was going to give another $1,200 for each qualifying dependent. The Republicans rejected the idea and the Senate responded with their own bill. On July 24th, they came up with the Health Economic Assistance Liability Protection and Schools or the HEALS Act. This was a complete 180 from the democratic HEROES Act because instead of spending $3 trillion, this proposal called for $1 trillion. It focused more on funding the reopening of schools, and helping hospitals. It also called for the reduction of the $600 unemployment benefit down to $200. However, the heals proposals did call for $1,200 stimulus checks in their budget for people with the same income limitations of less than 75,000. They both agreed on a direct payment so where did it go wrong? Two main reasons. Funding for the state and local governments because the Heals Act did not want to give money to the states, while the HEROES Act did - it called for $1 trillion dollars in help. The second difference, is the foreclosures and evictions which the Cares Act did more to stop by extending the freeze on evictions for another year, while the heals act wanted to let the protections expire. That brings us to today. The focus is less about helping the American people directly, and more about the US. Postal Service which will play a key role on November 3rd - the Presidential election. Recently, Louis Dejoy has been at the center of criticism from both democrats and republicans. Since taking the job on June 15th, he made some big changes. Some of these changes are reducing overtime hours for employees and arguably one of the more important changes - is getting rid of the postal sorting machines. Because of this struggle for power, the attention for the stimulus checks has temporarily been taken away by the focus on the election. Two new bills were put forward. For the Democrats, the bill would give the US postal service $25 billion dollars in funding. But more importantly, the bill prevents the postal service from making major changes that would affect election results. For the senate, the proposal is called Delivering Immediate Relief to America’s Families, Schools and Small Businesses Act, also called the “skinny version of the stimulus bill”. It asks for the $600 a week unemployment benefit to be cut down to $300 until December 27, it gives liability protections to businesses and healthcare providers, $100 billion for education, $10 billion to help the US postal service, and $45 billion to the department of health and human services. If there was a bill that included the stimulus checks that passes, it will most likely be for $1,200. The earliest it would be sent is either the week of September 21st, or the week of September 28th. On the low end, $1,200, on the high end, it would be a $6,000 payment.
