Recorded in Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen 2022 Full session: This piece by Gaspar Cassadó (1897-1966) can be found on the new album “Dark Fire” by Dutch cellist Joachim Eijlander; with music on the border of two worlds, with folk music as a recurring element. For example in “Lamento de Boabdil” the Arabic influence on Spanish music is clearly visible. Cassadó was a Spanish contemporary of Pablo Casals, who lived from 1897 to 1966. In fact, he may have been Casal's youngest pupil, when he studied with him in Paris in 1910. He was born in Barcelona, the son of a church musician. His father started teaching him music when he was five, and at the age of seven he began cello lessons with a prominent Barcelona cellist, who worked at the Mercedes Chapel with his father.
