The Serbian world champion, Nemanja Majdov, was severely punished by the International Judo Federation for making the sign of the cross upon entering a match at the Olympic Games. Nemanja received a five-month suspension for violating the Federation's religious codes, as announced. In a statement he made, he pointed out the following: “15 days ago, I received a 5-month suspension from the International Judo Federation (IJF) for violating their religious code. Specifically, I was punished for making the sign of the cross before a match at the Olympic Games. I am banned from all tournaments, camps, and training. Truthfully, in my defense letter for the disciplinary proceedings, I refused to apologize for making the sign of the cross, and of course, I haven't, nor will I ever, even though I didn't know how severe the punishment could be.
