“As Long As The Grass Shall Grow“ was written by Peter La Farge. Johnny Cash originally recorded the song for his 1964 concept album, Bitter Tears: Ballads Of The American Indian. During the recording of Johnny Cash's 1996 album, Unchained, the lyrics to “As Long As The Grass Shall Grow“ were altered to reflect Johnny's relationship with his wife, June Carter Cash. The song was re-recorded as a duet featuring June's vocals with backing from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. This version of “As Long As The Grass Shall Grow“ was eventually released on the compilation, Unearthed, in 2003.
