A time lapse movie showing a pole’s shadow moving and changing length during a sunny day. Media for my ’Notice Something’ science class - “Measuring the Size of the Earth“ where students notice the Earth’s surface must be curved, not flat, and calculate its circumference. See for more info. Students from Balwyn Primary School measured the Earth’s circumference to be between 38,576 km and 42,874 km using just the shadow cast from a pole, a bit of geometry and some smart thinking. Excellent result - the polar circumference is 40,008 km! Time lapse taken with a Canon EOS 60D and EOS utility in Melbourne, Australia on November 5th, 2013.
