The idea of this project came from getting to learn that Ennio Morricone had been commissioned to write music for the movie “Crepa padrone, crepa tranquillo” in 1970. The movie was not made, at least not at that time. Producer Giuseppe Zaccariello managed to get it done in 1979 as “Duri a morire” (Tough to Kill) directed by Joe D’Amato, with a totally different cast. Instead of Alain Delon, James Coburn, James Mason or Marcel Bozzuffi, we got Luc Merenda, Donald O’Brien and Percy Hogan. And instead of Ennio Morricone, we got Stelvio Cipriani. But most importantly, instead of a perhaps momentous cult soundtrack of the early 70s, we got a somewhat uninspired and quickly forgotten funky score. Morricone is for many the best film music composer ever, and the period 1967-1972 is probably the most stimulating and striking phase of his career.
