James Kalm is back for what has become the most sustained and highly viewed tradition of the James Kalm Report YouTube Channel. The 2023 edition of the “outsider art fair” is not only a chance to see examples of classic “art brut” and “Southern Vernacular” works, but important pieces by contemporary artists and new discoveries. This year’s affair has been critically received and reviewed in the New York Times, ARTnews, and the Gothamist. With 64 exhibitors, and hundreds of artist’s works, it would be impossible to list all the interesting pieces in this brief description. Here are but a few standouts from your reporter’s perspective: Alexandria Deters “False Prophets” is a selection of rugged embroideries depicting female cult founders, at Bill Arning. Andrew “Grandpa” Pfrienders gets a chat-up with Raphael Rubinstein at Nonprofessional Experiments. “A Group of Nine Visionary / Spiritualist Drawings Dedicated to Earl who is tasked with bringing light and love to Earth, c. 1952-1953” (these works were recently found in upstate New York) at the Steven S. Powers booth. A musical introduction is provided by Justin King. This program was recorded March 3, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
