Optometry is the healthcare profession that involves examining the eyes and applicable visual systems for defects or abnormalities, as well as the medical diagnosis and management of eye disease. Contact lenses are thin, curved disks made of flexible plastic or silicone that are placed directly on the surface of the eye to correct vision or for cosmetic or therapeutic purposes. There are several types of contact lenses available, including soft lenses, hard or rigid gas permeable lenses, and hybrid lenses. Soft lenses are made of a soft, flexible material that allows oxygen to pass through to the cornea and are the most commonly used type of contact lens. Astigmatism can be corrected with toric lenses. There are two different dosage strengths available (one for the correction of nearsightedness or farsightedness, the second correction is for astigmatism). Most people who have astigmatism can now have their vision corrected with one of the several available types of soft toric lens
