The Rainy Day by Longfellow (GLORIOUS RAIN POEM) Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Rainy Day” uses the themes of nature, emotion, depression, youth and grief to show how much our life experiences affect us and how though we face multiple struggles in life we can overcome them. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the most popular American poet of the nineteenth century, suffered much tragedy in his personal life, thus in this poem he compares his inward emotional and mental state to rainy/stormy weather. He tells about a very depressing day which is one of many in his life. He is feeling gloomy because every day for him is “dark and dreary“. Although he is depressed, he realizes that this is only a stage in his life and feels hope that it will soon be over.
