Scherzo: Pizzicato ostinato; Allegro (22:58) 4. Finale; Allegro con fuoco (31:36) Willem Mengelberg, conductor The Concertgebouw Orchestra Recorded on June 11/15, 1929 in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony enjoys a special place in the common repertoire second only to the “Pathetique“ in its popularity. Willem Mengelberg's recording, like his other Tchaikovsky, stands out as one of the most interesting. The conductor had an affinity for Tchaikovsky's music, and the present recording is as distinctive as a fingerprint. 1929 was a great year for recordings. High fidelity was becoming achievable, and the public, primed by the sound of the new condenser microphones on live radio, wanted more. In spite of its tremendous age, the present recording is quite satisfying to modern ears.
