Lecture date: 2006-10-16 Paul Kaiser discusses works for the stage and for public installation. The essential characteristic of each is that it thinks by picturing the emerging relationships between the things it perceives in the outer world. This process keeps its frames in constant flux, for it continually re-adjusts and tentatively advances its interpretation and understanding. While embodying its original intentions, the resulting artwork has the capacity to keep surprising its makers. This raises interesting questions about the role of the artist, the status of the image, and the experience of seeing - we can explore these by examining what might lie ahead and by casting a fresh glance at what has gone before. Kaiser is a partner with Marc Downie and Shelley Eshkar in the OpenEnded Group, which has made digital works for the stage with choreographers such as Merce Cunningham and Bill T Jones, and site-specific installations.
