Tachi is a type of katana that was mainly used on horseback while wearing armor, and Uchi-katana was used on foot and inserted in the obi belt. When most people talk about the differences between the two, they would point out that the Tachi is longer and more curved, that the sharp edge is facing a different way, or the decorations are different. But did you know that you can easily distinguish the two without talking about any of these things? All you have to do is see which side the front side of that katana is. Yes, there is actually a front and back side to a katana. The side that has the signature of the katana swordsmith carved on the handle, is the front side. When you have the front side facing you, if the sharp edge is down that’s a Tachi, and if it's up it’s an Uchi-katana. If you have a chance to visit a museum with katana, please check out where the signature is.
