Here is solo #10 from the classic drumming book Advanced Funk Studies by Rick Latham. This is one of my favorite books of all time and I use it regularly with students. Solo #10 is written in a 1/2 time funk style with an R&B feel reminiscent of the drumming of J.R. Robinson, Steve Gadd and Jeff Pocaro. This solo has a difficult bass drum part and I explain how to use a pivot method to play the fast double strokes. FIrst I play the solo and I show you two views from both the front and the side of the kit at the tempo of quarter note =144. I then demonstrate how to develop coordination and technique in this style using rhythms from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion.
