Developed on the basis of the KV-1 in January 1940, with a total of 334 vehicles manufactured from 1940 through 1941. The KV-2 tanks were used in action in 1941, with most of the vehicles lost the same year. One case was recorded when a single and moreover immobile KV-2 (or KV-1) machine in Lithuania near the village of Raisinaie from June 23 to 25, 1941, held the entire battle group “Raus“ belonging to the 6th Panzer Division in check and caused heavy losses in people, equipment and supplies. KV-2 prototype Adolf Hitler later stated in an
