Niccolò Paganini’s 24 Caprices for solo violin is perhaps the most famous piece by the early Romantic Italian composer, and among the most well-known pieces of all Western classical music in general. Each Caprice, like an étude, exploited and pushed to the limit a different set of skills. When the Caprices were first released, Paganini dedicated the composition to “all artists” rather than any particular person. Later, between 1832 and 1840, Paganini added specific unofficial dedications to his friends and colleagues in the annotations he made within his own copy of the score.
