Want to support this channel and help us preserve old films? Visit Visit our website Dating to the mid-to-late 1960s, this silent film shows equipment mock-ups for the Apollo program, including motion range and work studies with spacesuits in mock-ups of a Lunar Roving Vehicle or LVR. It was probably shot at the Marshall Space Flight Center. The film is one of many made to demonstrate astronaut mobility. The spacesuit shown is an early (possibly first prototype) which International Latex Corporation submitted to NASA as part of the Apollo suit competition in 1962, known as an SPD-143 model suit, (SPD for Special Products Division). NASA referred to this suit as being part of the AX1-L series and often referred to as a “Modified Training and Evaluation Suit.“ The reason the suit looks strange to a modern viewer is that it does not have an outer shell, because the joint designs were considered in development and left exposed to allow further study. 00:00:18- 00:02:04 technician is outfitted in prototype SPD-143 model suit with space helmet. 00:02:04-00:02:14 technician setting suit pressure 00:02:14-00:02:35 finish suiting up technician 00:02:35-00:02:45 technician at strip chart recorder and watching traces on strip chart 00:02:45-00:17:49 “astronaut“ working around and getting in and out of the rover on simulated lunar surface. This includes various tasks including strapping a three lens (possibly 3-D) camera to a stand (6:05) and taking pictures (6:55), using a device that looks like a compass or possibly surveyor's tool (8:16), setting up an experimental canister (9:26/11:44), winding a windlass (16:43) and more. Throughout the experiment, the “astronaut's“ vital signs are monitored by the test team. The Lunar Rover mobility test article shown was created by Brown Engineering (now Teledyne Brown Engineering Company). This golf-cart-style, two-man vehicle was built at Werner von Braun's direction and famously test driven by Von Braun in 1966).
