On 2 October 1991, just months before the final collapse of the USSR, ITN was granted access to the Yuri Andropov Red Banner Institute, the KGB's espionage academy outside Moscow. Cameras captured the next generation of Soviet spies undergoing a range of training activities, from investigating mock crime scenes to firing weapons on a shooting range. ITN also filmed outside KGB headquarters, also known as the Lubyanka Building, in Moscow. The square on which the building sat had recently been renamed from Dzerzhinsky Square (after Cheka founder Felix Dzerzhinsky) to Lubyanka Square. ITN filmed the empty podium from which a statue of Dzerzhinksy had been removed, and at the nearby patch of waste ground in which it had been deposited. #SovietUnion #KGB #Soviet #SovietWave #Moscow #USSR #Spies #ColdWar To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: OR R021091002* OR R021091003*&sort=oldest To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - @ITNArchive 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - 🎥 Like us on Facebook - 🎥 Check out our TikTok - @itnarchive1955
