The latest shots from Iceland as smoke rises from the ground on an Icelandic peninsula and thousands of residents of Grindavik are evacuated amid a warning from scientists that everything points to a volcanic eruption in the coming days. The fishing town of Grindavik, home to 3,000 people, has been ordered to evacuate amid concerns it could be destroyed by lava flows Here's a round-up of the state of play today, with a volcanic eruption expected this week following a spate of earthquakes: 🔴 Concern about a possible eruption increased in the early hours of when a magnitude-4.8 earthquake hit the area, forcing the internationally known Blue Lagoon geothermal resort to close temporarily; 🔴 “At this stage, it is not possible to determine exactly whether and where magma might reach the surface,“ the Icelandic Meteorological Office said; 🔴 Authorities have raised their aviation alert to orange, indicating an increased risk of a volcanic eruption. Volcanic eruptions pose a serious hazard to aviation because they can spew highly abrasive ash high into the atmosphere, where it can cause jet engines to fail, damage flight control systems and reduce visibility. #Iceland #Volcano #Eruption #Earthquake #Grindavik #Evacuate #Magma #Lava #Live SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel for more videos: Follow us on Twitter: Like us on Facebook: Follow us on Instagram: Follow us on TikTok: @skynews For more content go to and download our apps: Apple Android Sky News Daily podcast is available for free here: Sky News videos are now available in Spanish here/Los video de Sky News están disponibles en español aquí: To enquire about licensing Sky News content, you can find more information here:
