Watch as I install a MANUAL steering rack from a BMW Z4 into my E36! Instead of de-powering the existing hydraulically assisted 328i steering rack (by looping lines), I decided to do it the right way and find a manual rack: -The Z4 manual rack is 3 turns LTL (lock to lock) -The 328i power steering rack is 3.2 turns LTL -The Z4 manual rack ratio is 13.7:1 (LINEAR) -The 328i power steering rack is 15.6:1, after 200 degrees in either direction, it speeds up to 15.4:1 to lock (PROGRESSIVE) *BENEFITS OF MANUAL RACK* -Lighter steering rack -weight savings from lack of fluid/pump/lines -de-clutter engine bay - no PS pump/reservoir or PS cooler -zero potential for leaks -free up upwards of ~5 horsepower -quicker revs -stronger steering shaft -slimmer profile steering shaft for better LSx longtube fitment -faster turns -more direct feel of the road *CONS OF MANUAL RACK* -more steering effort required - moreso at parking speeds (although steering effort is easier using a manual rack vs de-powered hydraulic assisted rack)
