Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world The Park Fire in Northern California has grown into one of the largest wildfires in the state's history. Evacuation orders remain in effect in four counties — Butte, Tehama, Shasta, and Plumas. The fire is the state's largest wildfire this year and the fifth-largest wildfire in California history, burning 387,916 acres, Cal Fire said. So far, 434 structures have been destroyed and 39 damaged, with 307 structures destroyed in Butte County and 127 in Tehama County. The Butte County District Attorney’s Office announced it has arrested a Chico man on suspicion of arson. According to eyewitnesses, he pushed the burning car down the slope, which started such a large-scale fire. Several evacuation warnings have been lifted, including around the Chico airport and southern Cohasset, but are still in effect for areas like Forest Ranch, Sterling City and Bald Mountain. Officials say wildfire activity has increased dramatically across the state in 2024. The California Fire Service has released data showing wildfire activity has increased 2,816% compared to the same time last year. Cal Fire's incident page shows 18 active fires across the state — and the Park Fire dwarfs them all combined. #fire #California #wildfire
