But he’s failing to convince a lot of people. It’s got more to do with receiving millions of dollars from the US which isn’t prepared to deploy its own soldiers to the Caribbean island. At least that’s the view of Booker Omole from the Communist Party of Kenya. He describes it as ‘financial diplomacy’ without principles and says few Kenyans support their president on the venture. This week the UN approved the Kenyan-led security mission to Haiti to ‘tackle gang violence’. It will see Nairobi send 1,000 police officers in exchange for hundreds of millions of dollars from America. But will it really help, when all previous foreign interventions have failed to secure peace? Omole draws comparisons with Kenya and other East African countries sending troops to Somalia for cash.
