Son of a clergyman, he initially studied theology at Leipzig. Then his trace was lost until 1800, when he was appointed music teacher in Reval (now Tallin). Also there he was active as a pianist receiving notable fame as instrumentist. He remained there until 1836, a year he settled in Saint Petersburg for the rest of his life. As a composer, he wrote, among others, keyboard sonatas (, 22, 26, 46), dozens of waltzes, variations and polonaises as well as several Lieds, partsongs and masonic music.
