The new structure built to confine Chernobyl’s damaged reactor number 4 was shown to the media for the first time at the nuclear power plant in Ukraine. With a span of 843 feet, the special shelter is the largest moveable land-based structure ever built, and it took nine years to complete. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development funded the new confinement project with €715 million, alongside contributions from the European Union and 45 other countries. The megastructure seals in radiation from the molten reactor’s core and 200 tons of highly radioactive material. #Chernobyl #NuclearDisaster #Radiation #Disasters Report by Gianluca Avagnina.
