Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713), Italian composer of the late Baroque. In Corelli one hears a break with some of the conventions of strict counterpoint, a more galant accompagnato style. Corelli, whose music was studied and transcribed by J. S. Bach and others, focused on instrumental forces for which he composed a great many duo, trio, and quartet sonatas and a well-known set of concerti grossi. He is known for his melodic sensitivity.
