Each wheel had a hemisphere which if free moving. There were some suggestions that these hemispheres could be powered, although we'd have to vary the velocity as the main axel rotates because a small circumference will be touching the ground. We can use this to our advantage however to make a continually variable reduction or continually variable transmission (CVT).
