The tremor was recorded after midnight on Monday, February 12th, 2024, at 12:42 am local time, at a shallow depth of 9.9 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In El Centro (pop. 44,000) located 1 miles from the epicenter, Imperial (pop. 17,100) 3 miles away, Heber (pop. 4,300) 5 miles away, and Seeley (pop. 1,700) 7 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
